National Basketball League (Today, YMCA)
Women: UCU v A1
Men: Warriors v KIU
SAM Gombya spent three mysterious years with the Warriors outfit.
Now the enigmatic seven-footer is in the initial stages of life as a KIU Titan and it will be interesting to see how one of the most puzzling players in the National Basketball League (NBL) reacts to a change of environment.
Today at the YMCA, Gombya’s past meets his present as the Warriors face the Titans in the men’s NBL.
It’s hard to know how Gombya will react to the occasion because few things are predictable when it comes to the imposing centre.
As the Warriors painfully found out over the last three seasons, Gombya makes his own rules and often at a whim.
But KIU are hoping Gombya will add an extra dimension to what is an already balanced team.
Gombya is not the only one facing his immediate past in this game.
Joshua Etalu was KIU’s official captain last season but is now back with the team he helped win the 2009 championship.
KIU comfortably won their first two games of the season while the Warriors won their opener but all those victories came against lowly-ranked sides.
This game, therefore, represents either side’s first real test of the season.
Meanwhile, in the women’s NBL, A1 Challenge are concerned about their lack of size ahead of today’s encounter with reigning champions UCU Canons.
“We are short on bigs right now,” confessed A1 assistant coach Mavita Ali yesterday.
Put differently, it is a recipe for A1’s second defeat of the season
