Two electrifying performances less than 24 hours apart ensured DMark Power’s place in the semifinals of the Fiba Africa Zone V Club Championship.
Power followed up their 97-64 victory over South Sudan on Tuesday with an 85-73 result against Tanzania’s ABC yesterday at the Lugogo MTN Arena. Point guard Ben Komakech scored a team high 23 points but limped off with an ankle injury in the third quarter to slightly dampen the mood. It didn’t seem too serious after icing by the medical staff.
Skipper Isaac Afidra had 15 and 15 rebounds to add to the 16 against South Sudan. “I think the first game is pivotal and I am happy with where we are now,” Power coach Bernice Ankunda said. The Ugandan champions have now buried the 2009 memories when they failed to make it past the pool stage. They advance from pool B along with Kenya’s KCB Lions, losing finalists in the last edition.
KCB thrashed the South Sudanese 83-47. Power and KCB clash today to decide who tops the pool.
Earlier, the reigning regional champions, Urunani from Burundi, edged Rwanda’s Sspoir 68-66 in the most thrilling game of the annual tournament thus far for second successive win.
In the women’s draw, Kenya’s Eagle Wings are also through from pool B of a tournament that is yet to attract huge crowds. Wings beat Donbosco (Tanzania) 92-36 yesterday to add to the 75-64 win over UCU Lady Canons on Monday.
