KENYA : Kenyans Claim Zone Five Title

Kenya's KPA lifted the 2011 Africa Zone Five basketball club championship title after edging out Berko Stars of Burundi in the final yesterday.The Kenyan girls, led by Joyce Makungu, beat their opponents 57-42 in an exciting final at the National Indoor Stadium.

KPA made it into yesterday's final after thumping hosts Jeshi Stars 69-51 and Berko Stars sailed through at the expense of Uganda KCC who they hit 65-61 in the semi finals on Friday.
Yesterday's final started at a cracking pace with both teams displaying swift and accurate passes to the delight of their respective fans, who were on their feet throughout the game.
After a tight battle in the opening exchanges of the first quarter, Berko Stars slightly lost steam towards the end of the quarter, enabling KPA to take a 10-9 lead.
The second quarter was even more exciting, with the two teams pressing up front in turn. It was difficult to predict then winner. The Kenyans took a 13-10 half time lead before winning the third quarter 23-19.
Joyce Makungu and Helena Oketha were instrumental to the KPA's laboured win. They scored 13 and 10 points respectively.Neerwa Ines was a notable player for Berko Stars. She netted 12 points.
In the third-place play off, Tanzania's Jeshi Stars went down 60-52 to Uganda KCC at the same venue.
In the men's third-place play off, KCB of Kenya beat Rwanda's APR 89-79
