RWANDA : Hoops Olympic hopes end with defeat

RWANDA’s hopes of competing at next year’s Olympic Games were shattered as the men’s basketball team lost to Cote d’Ivoire in the knock out round of the FIBA
Africa Championship in a tightly contested game played yesterday at the Palais des Sports, Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Cote d’Ivoire joined the likes of Central African Republic, Nigeria and Cameroon in the quarterfinals.
Point guard Kenneth Gasana high scored with 30 points; Cameron Bradley added nine rebounds while Robert Thomson made three assists as Rwanda won the first
and two quarters by 19-17 and 25-16 respectively.
By somehow, Vaceslav Kavedzija’s side managed to throw away the third and fourth quarters by 18-25 and 10-22 hence handing victory and a place in the last
eight to the Western Africans.

The tournament serves as a qualifying championship for teams to participate in the quadrennial Fiba World championship and the Olympic basketball tournament
in London next year.
