KENYA : Champs Lions back to winning ways

National basketball league champions Kenya Commercial Bank Lions rediscovered their winning form to beat Strathmore University 72-53 in their first leg tie at the Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

After Co-operative Bank shattered their unbeaten record by defeating them 58-55 last weekend, Lions looked well organized from start to lead 38-23 at half-time.

Anthony Mbori led the bankers with 24 points while Tobias Onyango weighed in with 16. Paul Nyakinda had an identical score for the students, followed by Emmanuel Odhiambo with 14.

In other matches, Mennonites ended Lakside’s five match unbeaten record when they rocked the Kisumu-based side 68-65 while Nairobi Aviation harvested maximum two points following their 55-47 win over Kenya Polytechnic.

On Saturday, Lakeside had beaten World Hope 59-53 at the Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

This win took them to the top of the table with 10 points from five consecutive victories. World Hope had taken a 26-20 half-time lead but lost concentration to lose their fourth match.

Collins Otieno scored 16points while Robert Ogweno added 11 for the winners. Erick Kayiere and James Otundo,who was ejected by referee June Oluoch replied with 10 points each.

In other matches at the same venue, Parklands Baptist also kept their score-sheet clean in five outings when they beat Nairobi Pentecostal Church 52-43 while Kenya Polytechnic celebrated their first win in the women’s championship when they defeated Kenya College of Accountancy-University 30-18.
