UGANDA : YMCA court will be ready in May

By Charles Mutebi

THE YMCA basketball court in Wandegeya will be ready for the start of the 2009 national league season after the impasse that had stalled the completion of its reconstruction was resolved last week. Work on the facility resumed this week.

The YMCA administration had ordered local basketball governing federation FUBA, to halt renovations on the court. The owners were not happy with the quality and speed of work, vowing to see through the project themselves instead.

The dispute was, however, resolved after a series of meetings.

The work is expected to take seven days according to site manager Godwin Sseremba. We will be done here by next week, Sseremba said, as his team went about their work.

What we are going to do is basically flatten the surface with marrum then tarmac it thereafter, he explained.

The news will be of great relief to the basketball fraternity who were facing the spectre of going into the season unable to watch the game at its local home.

The court will be ready for use before the start of the season, FUBA treasurer Chris Kyebambe guaranteed yesterday, less than a week after writing off the likelihood of such a scenario and thereby encouraging league teams to plan hosting league matches.
