UGANDA : Fuba secures YMCA courts for league ties

After several months of uncertainty, the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (Fuba) has finally secured a venue to host the National League.

Fuba, on Wednesday, struck a deal with Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) management to have the games staged at the institution’s basketball court in Wandegeya. “By next week, I am sure everything will be in place for us to start,” Fuba treasurer Chris Kyebambe said.

Fuba and YMCA management have been locked in a disagreement over the refurbishment of the court – Uganda’s most popular basketball facility. But following weeks of negotiations, basketball is now returning to its ‘home’. “We agreed to work on the surface first before embarking on refurbishing the seats,” Kyebambe revealed. Adding; “We are also looking at constructing dressing rooms to accommodate two teams.”

The MTN Uganda sponsored league would have started last month but Lugogo Indoor stadium – the alternative venue – is also closed for refurbishment. This prompted Fuba to postpone action to April 24 as they tried to secure other venues around Kampala. Kyebambe revealed that the Fuba technical committee is now working round the clock to avail teams with fixtures. “By the end of this week, we shall have a draft fixture for all registered teams,” he said.

Will all games be played at one YMCA facility or will they be played at different venues? Obviously, there is room at Lugogo too. --Matt
