TANZANIA : Dar teams leave for regional Inter Cities b’ball meet

Dar es salaam teams both men and ladies popularly known as ‘Dream Teams’ leaves tomorrow for Arusha to compete in Inter Cities Basketball tournament set to start from Tuesday to Saturday. The teams received regional flag from the Dar es Salaam City Mayor, Adam Kimbisa, today during a brief ceremony at the Karimjee Hall in the City.

Kimbisa expressed his optimism that Dar es Salaam will prevail in the championships. “I believe you have formidable teams both for men and ladies. You should therefore, make sure that you win both trophies,” he told the players and team official. Dar es Salaam are the defending Champions in the Men’s category.

Dar women team finished second behind Kampala City who won the 2008 championship in Dar es Salaam. President of Basketball Dar es Salaam (BD) Simon Msofe said the teams would leave with a contingent of 28 players. He said the teams received 8,000 US dollars (about 10m/-) from SD Africa company to prepare for the tournament, saying players are in upbeat mood ready for the event.

Cities that have confirmed their participation in the championships are Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Mbeya, Tanga, Nairobi, Mombasa, Kampala, Entebbe, Kigali and Harare. The players in the men team which are under coaches Bahati Mgunda and his assistant Dassty Macula are Gilbert Batungi, Philbert Mwaipungu, Frank Agustino (JKT), Frank Kusiga, Charles Makene, Francis Mlewa, Musa Chacha, Tumsifu Apollo (Vijana), Jacob Marenga, Obote Mwambongo, Alfonce Kusekwa, Sudi Razak, Sylivian Maige (OILERS).

Others are Gerald Baru, Lusajo Samwel -- Mgulani, Edmund Pastory, (UDSM Outsider), Cloudio Kisanko (Hooplife), William Muze (PT STARS), Hosea Baraigwa (Savio), George Tarimo, Mohamed Yusuph. The ladies team under the tutelage of Peter Samson include Lucy Augustino, Faraja Malaki, Jabu Shaaban, Annomisiata Antony, Nipael Kessy, Agness Simkando, Grace Mugyabuso (Jeshi Stars), Esther Fanuel, Dorita Mbunda, Lulu Joseph, Elizabeth Masenyi and Angela Ignas (JKT).

Others are Neema Emmanuel, Annah Paul from Polisi Dar es Salaam, while players from Don Bosco Lady Lion are Amina Ahmed, Khadija Kalambo and Nina Mliga. Zakia Kondo, Esther Idd, Mwadawa Khamis, Nuru Fundi and Fanuna Yasini are from Cargo Ladies, while from Tanzania Prisons are Naima Bori, Zuhura Twalib and Semeni Aswile. The men team has been training at the Zanaki courts, while ladies team has been training at ABC courts.
