KENYA : Six venues to host national league games this year


For the first time, the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) national classic league will be played in six venues countrywide.

This follows the entry into the league by teams from Easter and Western Province. The new clubs are Eastern Queens who will play in the women's premier league and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) who have joined the lower division.

Queens, which is virtually a Nairobi based outfit will be playing their home matches in Meru while MMUST will have their home ties at the Kakamega Police Canteen.

A total of 29 teams will take part in this year's championships that throws off April 4 with the opening matches at the Coca Cola National Stadium in Nairobi. The first leg fixtures come to an end on July19 after a total of 137 matches.

Previously the league matches have have been played at Coca Cola Stadium in Nairobi, Makande Welfare Hall in Mombasa, Menengai High School in Nakuru and Kenyatta Sports Ground in Kisumu.

The biggest fixture of all pitting reigning champions Kenya Commercial Bank Lions against runners up Co-operative Bank of Kenya is programmed for July 4. KCB face Posta a week latter and play Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) on June 28.

In the ladies match,up champions KPA will tackle Eagle Wings, a team they beat for last year's crown in Mombasa on May 16, tackle Eastern Queens on July 4 with Wings playing Queens on April 12in a tight duel.

New comers Kenya College of Accountancy (KCA) who jumped from the Nairobi Provincial League to the top tier will find life at the rough really rough and their opener is against Sprite Storms on April 19.
