UGANDA : Hawks pull out of league

Gulu Hawks will not take part in this year’s MTN-Fuba League. The upcountry side revealed they have been forced out by the local governing body-Fuba’s double standards in running the league. “It is unfortunate that we can’t play league basketball any longer. We have a feeling we can’t co-exist with the current Fuba (Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations) administration. They can’t consider our views at any time,” Gulu Hawks player-cum team manager Denis Akena told Daily Monitor on phone.

Being an upcountry club, Gulu Hawks have always struggled to raise funds to make it for league games in Kampala. “Last year we requested for postponement of two games (against Power and Warriors) but Fuba wouldn’t listen,” Akena said.
“Whenever we come to Kampala, we are made to play two games in a space of few hours which is a threat to players’ health.” As a way of minimizing costs, Akena revealed that players are forced to spend nights out instead of checking into hotels.
