KENYA : Champs KCB Lions roar to 15th straight victory

Reigning national champions KCB Lions made it 15 wins out of 15 matches when they halted Kenyatta University "Pirates" three game premier league run with a 88-64 drubbing at Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium.

Lions enjoying best ever run,raced to a 5-0 run but two three pointers by Griffin Ligare and James Omune cut the bankers lead to 26-31 in the second quarter. Lions went to the break with a slim 39-30 advantage.

KCB's superiority showed in the third quarter on efforts by Yoni Wanambiro and Voctor Odendo. Wanambiro made it 45-30 and Odendo hit another jumper for a 56-34 edge as KU went on a long draught without finding the target.

With 1:00 minute to the end of the quarter, the lively Odendo swished another three for 63-34 and Wanambiro made it a 30 points cushion when he hit a another perimeter shot with 0:25 seconds left to play.

A baseline jumper by Juma Ikapian opened the flood gates in the fourth and soon KCB enjopyed a 35 point difference making it a blowout. Lions balanced attack was led by Tobias Onyango who had 18 points.

Odendo 17, Ikapian 15 and Wanambiro 14. For the students, Phil Dinga scored 16 while Ligare and Omune managed 14.

KU had the previous day avenged their controversial fisrt leg premier league loss to Strathmore University when they crushed them 75-56.


Phil Dinga hit the game opener for KU but the Baldes replied through Josh Oswana who made two early three pointers as Strathmore took a brief lead. KU's Greg Were andD inga then ensured the winners went to the break with a 27-23 advantage.

After resumption, KU build on that slim lead gradually shooting to a comfortable cushion. Griffin Ligare, the dimunitive KU point guard caused havoc running plays with greatest precission while hitting clutch baskets to the delight of his veteran tactican Gitau Waringo.

Ligare popped in game high 29 points while Dinga added another 11 for KU who have now won three straight games since coming back from a month's recess. For the distarught Strathmore side, Paul Nyakinda managed 11 while Ken Murema hit 12.

In another battle of the varsity sides, University of Nairobi "Dynamites" winless run continued when they were hit 64-36 by United States International University (USIU). The Flames were led by national team players Samba Mjomba and Hilda Luvandwa.

Mjomba scored 17 points while Luvandwa nailed 14 for USIU who shot also nine three pointers in an effort led by Linda Sirma who bagged three. UoN had 11 points from Eleanor Musundi.

Women leaders Eagle Wings led 40-12 at the break and went on to crush Yana 66-26 behind 18 points from Eunice Ouma and another 14 from national team vice captain Caroline "Majeng" Achieng. Yana, with only a win to their credit, had 10 from the hard working Rachel Makena.

USIU made it two wins in a week, when they recovered to hit Strathmore University 60-42. Samba Mjomba nailed 18 points, Hilda Luvandwa provided 17 while Evlyne Nora bagged 11 for the victors. Linet Mukiri was the only shining light for Swords as she regsitered her teams 11 points.

In Mombasa, defending women champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) thumped Sprite Storms 52-25 in a one sided encounter at the Makanda Welfare Hall. Yvonne Akinyi led KPA charge with 13 points while Irene Makori scored the visitors eight. It was redemption for KPA, who were stunned in Nairobi 49-47 a few weeks ago.
