Newly promoted FCT Queen, could not withstand the experience of First Bank, who are currently the regning champions of the Nigerian Women League. First Bank yesterday showed superiority when they defeated the FCT Queens 85-30 in the opening match of the 2008 first circuit currently going on at the indoor sports hall of the national stadium Abuja.

The reigning championships look to defend their league title with this much being disclosed by coach Adewumi, who promised that "we are not going to underrate any team in our quest to retain the Nigerian league and return to the continent and be counted as contenders."

However, the FCT Queens coach refused to be intimidated insisting that "though others may look at us as new entrants, we are out to win our next matches.

Speaking with Leadership Weekend Sports, the secretary of the Nigeria basketball federation, NBBF, Francis Ebiri said that everything has been put in place to ensure a successful league session beginning from the first circuit to the second circuit which will be played in Lagos. He commended the patriotism of Zenith Bank for sponsoring the female Basketball in Nigeria. The secretary revealed that the sponsors, Zenith Bank released N16m to the federation for the execution of this year's tournaments. He, however, challenged other corperate bodies and individuals to invest in sports as this will ensure a bright future for the youths of this country. Francis also tasked sports writers to be objective in their reports, saying that some sports writers write out of context, at times intentionally to cause trouble.

He was of the opinion that sports reporters should always cross check their information before going to press.
