NIGERIA : Jos, Enugu, Lagos to host female league

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and club owners of the female clubs in the West African country rose from a parley held over the last weekend and chose the cities of Jos, Abuja, Enugu and Lagos to host the four phases of the Zenith Bank Women’s League for the 2007/08 season.

The meeting was held at the Federation’s office in Abuja and attended by the representatives of the 10 teams that will feature in the current edition of the league.

February 23 was chosen by the joint meeting as the start off date but will remain as tentative until their federation finishes consultations with the league sponsors. Registrations for the teams began on Monday, January 21st and will run through the 14th of next month. First Bank Club who are defending champions will play alongside Dolphins – last season’s runners up, Delta Force, Sunshine Babes amongst others.

The teams, according to the NBBF are allowed to register a maximum of 15 players from which 12 can play for each match. That section of the rules also allows maximum two foreign players or two Nigerian internationals living abroad provided they are registered from the start of the season as part of the 15.

“It was a very constructive meeting. Discussions touched every aspect and agreement reached. The inputs of the clubs and other stakeholders were included as we strive to have the best female league in Africa,” the Secretary of the Federation Francis Gbiri said.
