NIGERIA : Dauda confident of surprise win

Nigeria coach Adeka Dauda is confident his side can become the first from Africa to win the FIBA U19 World Championship, which tips off tomorrow in Serbia.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group C alongside Turkey, Australia and Canada and Dauda is in bullish mood.

He said: "This is a big challenge for everybody in the team and we will try our best to win the trophy.

"If we could do it in South Africa last year when we won the FIBA Africa U18 Championship that qualifies us for the World Championship, I am sure we can repeat the feat in Serbia by becoming the first African nation to win the trophy.

"We have a lot of factors working in our favour and these will in turn help us to win at the end.

"We have players who are young and hungry for success, they are very talented and hard working.
"When you look at these factors, I have absolute confidence that we will return to Africa with the trophy no matter the opposition."

Nigeria captain Daniel Daudu added: "We may be regarded as one of the underdogs but I want to state categorically that Nigeria will be among the leading contenders for the trophy at the end.

"The players will announce to the whole world that Nigerian and African basketball has come of age."
