KENYA : KPA Girls Shocked By Telkom

Kenya Ports Authority's women's team suffered their first National Classic league defeat when bitter rivals Telkom Kenya drubbed them 52-46 in the return leg match at the Nyayo Stadium Gymnasium.
The win which came at the time when the team was preparing to represent the country in the Africa Club championships in Gabon from October 18 has thrown the quest for this year's league title open between defending champions KPA, Kenya Telkom and Sprite storms.KPA who have have not stabilised since star guard Rose Ouma left for the United States on a basketball scholarship were on the receiving end as Telkom led 21-10 in the first quarter and 34-20 at the break.

Caroline Achieng Majeng, Joyce Makhungu, Mwajuma Suleiman and Caroline Arato damaged the Dockers with quick and accurate passes scoring basket after basket. Coach Anthony Ojukwu seemingly ran out of ideas in the absence of Sammy Wanjohi who is in Eritrea to conduct a coaching clinic.
It was a late rally by Miriam Awuor and Gladys Wanyama who played a great game that saved the day for the Dockers as they reduced the score line in the third and fourth quarter.
Arato led the scorecard for Telkom with 23 points and Achieng had 15 while Awuor was the highest scorer for KPA with 16 points.
KPA who finished the preliminaries at the top now face Yana Milele in the play-off semi finals while Telkom take on Sprite Storms in the other semi final.

In the men's play-offs defending champions Ulinzi take on KCB while Cooperative Bank square it out with United States International University. In Division One matches, Kisumu Lakeside take on Mennonites while Java Warriors face Strathmore.

Elsewhere, the national teams intensified their training for the East and Central Africa championship to be held in Kigali Rwanda next month.

The women's team which has been training under Smarts Olumbo and Ben Oluoch stepped up their training at the Nyayo stadium under Ronny Owino. The men's team is being coached by KCB's Francis Ngunjiri and Waringo Gitau of Kenyatta University.
