NIGERIA : Borno, Bauchi Win Sahara Milo Basketball Tourney

GOVERNMENT College, Maiduguri, Borno State at the weekend outscored top favourites, Government Comprehensive Day Secondary School, Bauchi 67-53 to win the boy's category of the 2006 Nestle Milo Secondary School Basketball championship in the Sahara Conference.

Bauchi State through their representatives in the girl's category, Government Girls College, Bauchi had earlier overpowered hard-fighting Adamawa State representatives, Gen Murtala Mohammed College, Yola 30-27 in a tension-soaked final.

The Borno boys, who have qualified to play in the national final slated for October alongside the Adamawa girls, came strongly determined to carry the day. In fact, the Borno boys were the least favoured, but they fired a warning in their semi-final match against highly favoured Gombe State's Gombe High School when they (Borno) won 27-19 to the surprise of many.Borno boys combined their dribbling skills and technical discipline, to outplay their very aggressive opponents from Bauchi who paid very dearly for their urgentlemanly conduct.

The Bauchi boys ended the final with only two players against Borno's five as the rest were sent off due to maximum technical fouls committed.

Expectedly, Borno boys who entered the final as underdogs were cheered on by the sympathetic crowd eagerly awaiting a major upset. The court was filled with excited players and their supporters when the Borno boys took thehome team to the cleaners in the extra time after the match had tied at 51-51. Borno boys recorded 16 baskets as against Bauchi's 2 in the extra time that looked more or less like a training session.
